LiquidSonics has developed a convolution reverb plugin that aims to sound like an algorithmic reverb—specifically, one of the most coveted algorithmic reverbs on the market. When convolution plugins first became widely available, they appeared to be the future of reverb technology, though their heavy CPU usage held them back from taking over the industry. Fast forward about 15 years, and while processing power is no longer a limiting factor, many top-tier reverbs remain algorithmic in nature. One such revered processor is the Bricasti M7, a rack-mounted unit that dedicates immense DSP resources to delivering a superior artificial reverb experience.

Fusion-IR Technology

Matthew Hill, the founder of LiquidSonics, has spent years addressing the perceived limitations of convolution reverb plugins, particularly the criticisms that they sound flat, lifeless, and lack flexibility for editing. His research led to the development of Fusion-IR, a technology that extensively multi-samples the reverb source, such as a room or plate, and offers multiple options for editing impulse responses. Fusion-IR also introduces modulation and movement to these impulses, resulting in a more dynamic and vibrant sound. This groundbreaking technology made its debut in the Reverberate 2 plugin, which was reviewed in May 2016, and has since been incorporated into other products like Slate Digital’s VerbSuite Classics.

One of the standout features of Reverberate 2 was its large library of presets based on the Bricasti M7. Now, with Bricasti’s endorsement, Hill has taken it a step further by developing a plugin that not only replicates the sound of the M7 but also its look and feel. This new plugin, Seventh Heaven Professional, is available in all major native formats and uses the iLok system for authorization. With a full preset library that occupies around 10GB of disk space, LiquidSonics provides a modular installation process. The main plugin installer includes 3.5GB of core content, while two optional installers add the remaining presets from M7 versions 1 and 2, allowing users to download only what they need.

User-Friendly Interface

Reverberate 2 is known for its extensive features, but its complexity may present a steep learning curve for users accustomed to traditional algorithmic reverbs. In contrast, Seventh Heaven Professional is designed to operate much more like a classic hardware reverb unit, even mimicking the retro red LED display of the Bricasti M7. However, LiquidSonics hasn’t gone overboard in replicating the M7’s hardware design, opting for a more user-friendly GUI. Instead of faux brushed metal or 3D knobs, the interface is laid out in a clear, manageable format, with additional features like level meters for inputs, early reflections, late reflections, and the sub-200Hz component, known as VLF.

Many users will find themselves gravitating toward the two red text displays in the center of the plugin window. These displays allow quick selection from 10 preset banks, including Ambience1, Chambers1, Plates, Halls, Rooms, and Spaces1 and 2. These banks replicate the original M7 presets, and each preset loads with minimal adjustments required. Many of these presets work seamlessly within a mix right out of the box, though users can make quick tweaks with global controls like Decay Time, a low-end control slider, and a balance control for early and late reflections.

Advanced Controls and EQ

For those who want more control over the plugin’s sound, Seventh Heaven Professional includes an optional advanced control panel. This can be accessed by clicking either the “Advanced Controls” or “Master Equaliser” buttons, revealing additional parameters. The Advanced Controls section includes options for selecting different early reflection patterns, adjusting pre-delay, and using a separate delay line that can be fed into the late reflections engine. Additionally, there are controls for setting high-frequency roll-off points for both early and late reflections, as well as independent decay time adjustments for low and high frequencies relative to the overall decay time.

The Master Equaliser section features high- and low-pass filters, along with three fully parametric EQ bands. The low and high bands can also be switched to shelving mode, giving users even more flexibility in shaping the frequency response of the reverb. This comprehensive EQ section allows for precise tonal adjustments to the reverb, ensuring it can be tailored to fit any mix.

Conclusion

LiquidSonics has managed to create a convolution reverb plugin that captures the essence of the Bricasti M7, one of the most highly regarded algorithmic reverbs on the market. With the inclusion of Fusion-IR technology, Seventh Heaven Professional brings the flexibility, vibrancy, and modulation capabilities that traditional convolution plugins have often lacked. The user-friendly interface, combined with advanced controls and a robust EQ section, makes this plugin both accessible to beginners and powerful enough for seasoned professionals. By balancing the simplicity of hardware-inspired operation with the deep customizability of modern plugins, Seventh Heaven Professional stands out as a must-have reverb plugin for anyone looking to add the magic of the Bricasti M7 to their productions.
