Discover the transformative journey of Logic Pro, which emerged as the next-generation powerhouse following Logic Pro 9, officially launching on July 16, 2013. This version introduced a sleek, customizable single-window interface that aligns beautifully with the aesthetics of Final Cut Pro X. Among its groundbreaking features is Drummer, a virtual session player that seamlessly adapts to your music, offering a rich variety of drumming styles and techniques. Flex Pitch revolutionizes pitch editing, providing an intuitive approach akin to Flex Time for audio recordings. The Smart Controls feature empowers users to manage multiple plugin parameters through a single, streamlined interface. Redesigned keyboards and synthesizers, along with innovative stomp boxes, bass amp designs, and drum kit creators, enhance your creative toolkit. A completely overhauled sound and loop library, paired with a new Patch architecture, opens up a world of sonic possibilities. Track organization is elevated, allowing users to categorize tracks into intuitive groups such as acoustics, synthesizers, and vocals, while also offering control over solo, mute, and volume settings for each category. Enhancements in score editing and exporting, now compatible with MusicXML, along with MIDI plug-in support, further enrich the user experience. The introduction of Logic Remote, a companion iPad app, allows for wireless control of Logic Pro, enabling users to play and record software instruments effortlessly while navigating and mixing their projects. Transitioning to a 64-bit architecture, Logic Pro no longer supports 32-bit plugins, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility. The release of Logic Pro 10.4 brought exciting features like ChromaVerb reverb, Smart Tempo, and the ability to undo mixer actions. Logic Pro 10.5, launched in May 2020, introduced Live Loops, Sampler, Quick Sampler, and more, including a demo project for Billie Eilish’s Ocean Eyes. In November 2020, the software was rebranded as Logic Pro, aligning with the launch of macOS 11 Big Sur. The release of Logic Pro 10.7 in October 2021 coincided with Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, supporting audio production in Dolby Atmos and surround sound formats, along with new demo projects featuring multitrack versions of Lil Nas X’s Montero. May 2024 marked the arrival of Logic Pro 11, the first major update in over a decade, emphasizing machine-learning tools and introducing Session Players, a virtual bassist and keyboardist, alongside innovative AI-powered plugins like Stem Splitter and ChromaGlow for mixing and mastering.
Apple has announced the upcoming release of Logic Pro 11 and Logic Pro for iPad 2. With these new versions, both DAWs will see significant updates, including the addition of AI-powered virtual bandmates such as bass and keyboard players, alongside the introduction of new features like Stem Splitter and ChromaGlow. These enhancements promise to elevate the music production experience within the DAW.
Session Players
The AI-powered drummer, a feature introduced over a decade ago, has been well-received for generating drum patterns that adapt to the track rather than relying on static loops or laborious programming. With the release of Logic Pro 11, Apple expands this functionality to include virtual keyboard and bass players, enhancing the virtual band experience within the DAW.
These new virtual instruments, developed in collaboration with top musicians, offer a range of playing styles—eight for the bass and four for the keyboard. They are designed to follow progressions set in the software’s Chord Track. In addition, Logic’s Studio Bass and Studio Piano plug-ins will provide users with six acoustic and electric bass options and detailed control over piano sounds, including mic positions, pedal and key noise, and release samples.
Stem Splitter
Logic Pro 11 introduces the Stem Splitter feature, making it the latest DAW to include built-in stem separation capabilities. This function allows users to decompose mixed audio files into their component parts, such as drums, bass, vocals, and other elements. This separation facilitates tasks like removing, isolating, or replacing parts, applying different effects, and adjusting balances. Apple claims that the processing times are quick, thanks to the power of their M-series processors.
ChromaGlow
ChromaGlow is the newest saturation plug-in addition to Logic Pro, designed to replicate the effects of some of the most coveted studio hardware. With five different styles of saturation, ChromaGlow aims to infuse tracks with warmth, presence, and punch, ranging from subtle vintage-style enhancements to more pronounced distortion effects.
“Logic Pro gives creatives everything they need to write, produce, and mix a great song. Our latest features elevate that creativity to a new level. With AI-backed updates and the unparalleled performance of iPad, Mac, and M-series Apple silicon, Logic Pro delivers the best music creation experience in the industry.” – Brent Chiu-Watson, Senior Director of Apps Worldwide Product Marketing, Apple
