We explore the latest iteration of what arguably remains the most comprehensive audio repair software available within the Restoration Bundle.
Thankfully, spectral editing has evolved significantly! While you can still perform those forensic-level manual edits in the spectral display if needed and if you have the skills, products like iZotope’s RX now make this kind of editing accessible to everyone with easy-to-use processing tools and advanced machine-learning algorithms.
RX continues to be a leading product in the field, and 18 months after Hugh Robjohns reviewed RX10 (SOS January 2023), iZotope has released RX11. As before, RX11 is available in three versions—Elements, Standard, and Advanced—that are essentially the same app with varying features at different price points. For a detailed comparison of these versions, you can refer to the comparison chart on iZotope’s website. This review will focus on the ‘full-featured’ Advanced version, which is part of the Restoration Bundle.
iZotope describes recent iterations of RX as a ‘toolkit for audio repair.’ This toolkit includes a collection of processing modules designed to streamline specific editing tasks, such as noise reduction, de-clicking, reverb removal, reducing guitar finger squeaks, matching EQ from source to target, and stem unmixing/rebalancing. The quality of results can vary depending on the audio being processed, but RX is often capable of significantly improving poor audio and even making ‘unusable’ audio usable. RX11 builds on the functions of RX10 and incorporates further advances in machine-learning technology, along with some notable ‘new and improved’ features.
Voice Control
RX11 introduces several new and improved tools for processing audio with human voices, with one of the most significant being the revamped Dialogue Isolate module. Leveraging machine learning, this module now combines de-noise and de-reverb options into a single, user-friendly tool that operates in real time (with minimal latency acceptable for post-production). This feature is now available in RX Standard (using the real-time algorithm), while RX Advanced offers an additional high-quality (albeit offline) option and customizable multiband processing.
In my tests, Dialogue Isolate effectively removed sonic clutter from old-school dialogue recordings without compromising the quality of the spoken voice. It’s a valuable tool for journalism and broadcasting, and I can easily see podcasters incorporating Dialogue Isolate into their post-production workflows for final clean-up. However, if this is the sole functionality you need, there are other competitive options, including iZotope’s own VEA and Accentize’s dxRevive, with the latter being particularly impressive.
Available in RX Advanced’s standalone Editor (not as a separate plug-in), the Dialogue Contour module has also been enhanced. This includes a reorganization of the slider controls and a pitch curve overlay on the waveform, providing a visual representation of ‘expression’ changes in dialogue. As you adjust pitch-curve nodes in the spectral display, a secondary curve shows how your edits affect the pitch curve. The control set now includes a Variation slider, which allows you to…
